Quaking Aspen (Populus Tremuloides) commonly known in the Northwoods as "Popple", is the most common tree found here. Harvested by loggers, it is primarily used in the production of paper. While walking in the forest, one can often hear the rustling sound of the leaves as they tremble, or "quake" in the wind. The aspen produces abundant forage for many woodland creatures. The aspen buds are the main staple for ruffed grouse through the long winters, as well as providing deer and moose with twigs and foliage. Beaver and porcupines like to eat the inner bark of the trees, while purple banded, tiger swallow, and viceroy butterflies consume the leaves.

Native North Americans have extracted it from the bark and roots for a painkiller and anti-fever medication. This brownish-red branch is located in swamps, stream banks, marsh borders, and other wet habitat throughout NW. When the decorative fuzzy catkins appear, it is a true sign of spring!

A beautiful warm gray or sand color, depending on the surroundings where it grows. Although a fragile twig, it is beautiful and aromatic with small pine cones and a rustic appeal. Tamarack was used by the Ojibwa people for wigwam poles and as a medicial for treating burns.

In Winter we never tire of seeing the deep, auburn contrast of the Willow (Salix) against the pure, winter white snow. We use straight, red hued willow twigs in our Willow Wreaths. Willow makes a beautiful wreath, especially in the spring time when it turns a bright red. There are many species, one of the most popular being the pussy willow.
